Apprehensions Executed in Link to Supersized Unlawful Landfill

Substantial mound of waste at an Oxfordshire county area
Officials thought that about 21,000 tonnes of rubbish were illegally dumped at the Oxfordshire area.

Two men have been taken into custody as an element of an inquiry into the illegal deposit of thousands of tonnes of refuse in a rural field in Oxfordshire, England.

Officials stated that a 69-year-old was apprehended at a property in Hampshire's Andover, while a 54-year-old was detained in the town of Slough in connection with the massive mound of rubbish dumped near Kidlington.

These detentions come after a previous revelation which revealed the operation of in excess of 500 unauthorized tips throughout England, including at minimum 11 so-called "major sites" bigger than 20,000 tonnes.

A representative for the environment body said that the apprehensions were for environment-related and proceeds of crime crimes and represented a "crucial step" in active inquiries. The apprehended men have been set free on bail.

Scale of the Situation

The tipping ground in the Kidlington area, positioned between the Cherwell River and the A34, is estimated to house approximately 21,000 tonnes of refuse in a mound which is up to 150m (490ft) lengthwise and 6m (20ft) high.

This mound of rubbish is consists of what seems to be processed residential waste, chopped up plastics, polystyrene, tires and various everyday articles.

It represents just one example of 517 unlawful tips in England, at least 11 of which hold over 20,000 metric tons of garbage. Such sites feature a 280,000-tonne area in Cheshire, two 50,000-tonne locations in Lancashire county and Cornwall county and a 36,000-tonne tip in Kent.

The actual number of such bigger locations is probably to be larger, as the environmental authority has earlier indicated it does not hold records on weight for each unlawful tip.

A large proportion of sites are in rural settings, frequently hidden, and on land that should be agricultural property.

Organized Enterprise

Law enforcement say numerous are run by organized crime groups, who are making cash by asking for much less than legitimate companies to receive and dispose of rubbish.

Firms have to be liable for site fees to use lawful disposal sites, based on the amount and category of refuse they are trying to discard, and landfill tax is also applied at just over £126 per ton.

Public Anger

Preparatory operations to clear the Kidlington site began earlier this month following fears over the threat of fire and the impact that would have on the nearby highway.

A commercial clean-up firm has been given the job to remediate the site over the following 12 months at a expense of £9.6m.

An enforcement officer for the country's environment division commented that the body would be aiming to claim back the clearance funds under asset recovery acts from any individual successfully found guilty at the conclusion of its ongoing case.

She noted that the recent apprehensions would help "drive the inquiry forward" and enable officials to "pursue more lines of inquiry to understand precisely what happened and who was implicated".

"This unlawful site at the site was an atrocious and calculated attack on our environment and officials empathize with the community's frustration at this horrific crime," she stated.

A senior official praised the detentions, stating: "This unlawful deposit of rubbish at the site is utterly appalling and has resulted in substantial detriment to the ecology and upset to the nearby population.

"The administration is dedicated to eliminating this category of criminality throughout the nation, by boosting financing to address illegal dumping, hiring more officers and implementing tougher measures and sanctions for those who break the law."

The arrests were executed on Thursday by personnel from a regional crime team and follow an prior apprehension of a man in his thirties from the Guildford area in November. He was set free awaiting additional enquiries.
