The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
