Much like the recent storm tore through the north-west the night before, Manchester City blew the visitors away at the their home ground. It was a statement 3-0 triumph for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Successive Losses for United

This result signalled consecutive Women's Super League defeats for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capacity to juggle league and continental soccer with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed subject since they qualified for the European competition. Considering the fixture list, it always appeared this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this fortitude. Unfortunately for the opposition, they looked weary from start to finish, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

Skinner had attempted to make changes with a a few alterations. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all brought freshness, although the omission of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the substitutes raised a few eyebrows.

Dominant First Half

Second Half

The most obvious substitution came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the match. Ex- City player Jess Park came closest, striking the woodwork, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and failed to register a single shot on goal.

The home side, meanwhile, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any opponent who placed above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a commanding position after nine games.
